The Social Security Administration (SSA) has launched a simplified online application for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), marking a significant step towards improving accessibility to crucial benefits. This user-friendly online tool is designed to streamline the initial SSI application process for eligible adults. Building on previous efforts to enhance online services, this new application reflects the agency’s ongoing commitment to modernizing and simplifying how individuals access social security programs.

SSI is a vital program providing monthly financial assistance to adults and children with disabilities, as well as individuals aged 65 and older, who have limited income and resources. The introduction of this streamlined Social Security Online application is the first phase of a broader, multi-year initiative aimed at making the entire disability application process less complex and more accessible to those who qualify.
Previously, individuals seeking to apply for both Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and SSI online could only indicate their intent to apply for SSI via the SSA website. Now, the enhanced social security online service includes a fully integrated, simplified version of the initial SSI application itself.
The new online SSI application boasts a significantly reduced number of questions. Thanks to user testing and feedback, the application has been condensed from as many as 54 questions to potentially as few as 12, depending on the applicant’s responses. Furthermore, the system is designed to pre-fill certain answers based on previously provided information, further simplifying the process and saving applicants valuable time.
This initial rollout of the social security online SSI application is currently available to adult applicants who meet specific criteria:
- Are between 18 and 64 years and 10 months of age and are applying for both SSI and SSDI.
- Have never been married.
- Have never previously applied for SSI, either for themselves or on behalf of a child.
- Are U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens (with no changes to existing noncitizen eligibility rules).
The SSA has future plans to expand this simplified application process to encompass all applicants, whether they apply online, by phone, or in person at a local office.
