Age and CDL Requirements
- Minimum Age: You must be at least 23 years old to qualify as a Landstar operator. This age requirement reflects the maturity and responsibility expected of professional drivers.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL): A Class A CDL is mandatory. Furthermore, you need to possess a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement (H) or a combination (X) endorsement. These endorsements demonstrate your ability to handle diverse types of freight, enhancing your opportunities within Landstar.
Driving Record Standards
Landstar places a high priority on safety, and your driving history is carefully evaluated. The requirements are as follows:
- Accidents and Violations: Your record should not exceed two at-fault accidents and two motor vehicle violations within the last 36 months. An alternative acceptable record is no more than one at-fault accident and three motor vehicle violations during the same 36-month period.
- Preventable Accidents: You must not have been involved in any preventable DOT recordable accident in the 12 months prior to your application.
- Serious Violations: No more than one serious violation as defined in Table 2 of section 383.51 of the FMCSR handbook within the 36 months before qualification.
- Railroad-Highway Grade Crossing Offenses: No railroad-highway grade crossing offenses as defined in Table 3 of section 383.51 of the FMCSR handbook within the 36 months before qualification.
- Reckless Driving/Careless Endangerment: No citations or convictions for Reckless Driving or Careless Endangerment during the 36 months prior to the MVR order date.
- DUI Charges: No DUI charges in a personal or non-commercial vehicle within the 60 months prior to the MVR order date, and absolutely no DUI charges ever in a commercial vehicle.
- Suspensions: No suspensions of your driving privileges for more than 30 days due to moving violations in the past 36 months.
Verifiable Driving Experience
Experience on the road is a critical factor. Landstar requires:
- Over-the-Road (OTR) Experience: You need one year (or six months for Expedited positions) of verifiable over-the-road driving experience, including driving in snow and ice conditions, within the past three years.
- Recent Experience Alternative: Alternatively, you can have three years of verifiable experience in the last 10 years, with at least six months of that experience being within the 48 months prior to your application.
- Equipment Type: Your experience must be with a Class A CDL (or Class B for Expedited) and using equipment similar to what you will be operating at Landstar.
Background and Compliance
Landstar also assesses your background and adherence to regulations:
- Felony Convictions: No felony convictions within the past 7 years are permitted. All other felony and misdemeanor charges are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
- Drug and Alcohol Testing: A clean record is essential. This means no positive drug or alcohol tests, including refusals and pre-employment results.
- English Proficiency: You must be proficient in English to understand highway signs and signals, communicate effectively with officials and the public, and complete necessary reports and records.
Insurance Requirements for Landstar Operators
Maintaining adequate insurance coverage is a fundamental part of operating under the Landstar banner. You will need to provide and maintain the following insurance types and levels throughout your lease with Landstar:
- Unladen Liability Coverage: This is mandatory. If you don’t participate in Landstar’s Unladen Liability program, you must demonstrate comparable coverage through acceptable insurance carriers.
- Occupational Accident Coverage or Workers’ Compensation: Occupational Accident coverage is mandatory, or in some cases, statutory Workers’ Compensation coverage may be required. Similar to Unladen Liability, if you opt out of Landstar’s CPP (Occupational Accident insurance) or fleet workers’ compensation plan (FWCP), you must provide equivalent coverage from licensed carriers with acceptable interstate coverage.
Important Note: While these are the minimum operator qualification standards based on DOT requirements, Landstar reserves the right to impose more stringent requirements at its discretion.
