Applying for your driving permit just got easier. You can now start your application and even take your Driving Test Online from the comfort of your home using a PC or tablet. While the initial steps are online, you will still need to visit the DMV to finalize your application. Before you begin your online driving test, ensure you have everything prepared for a smooth process.
What You Need to Take Your Driving Test Online
To successfully complete your driving test online, you need to be aware of a few key requirements.
Test Duration
Plan for approximately 30 to 40 minutes to dedicate to the online driving test. Ensure you have uninterrupted time to complete the test in one session.
Requirements for Test-takers Under 18
If you are under 18 years of age, there are additional requirements. A parent or legal guardian must:
- Grant permission to the DMV to use webcam photos during the test session.
- Supervise you throughout the entire driving test online.
- Accompany you to a DMV office to finalize your application and sign the official Online Permit Test Parent/Guardian Certification (PDF) (MV-263) in the presence of a DMV representative.
Webcam and Visibility
A working webcam is mandatory for taking the driving test online. You must enable webcam access to proceed. Throughout the test, multiple images will be captured to confirm your identity and ensure test integrity. Choose a well-lit area where you are clearly visible and alone. If you are not clearly identifiable in the images, or if other individuals are present, you may be required to retake the test in person at a DMV office.
Required Identification Documents
You will need to provide scans or photos of your identification documents during the online application process. Remember to bring the original documents with you when you visit the DMV to get your photo taken and pay the permit fees. Refer to these guides to understand which documents are acceptable:
