Are You Eligible for Online Renewal?
To renew your Missouri license plates online, you generally need to meet the following criteria:
- PIN Requirement: You should have a Personal Identification Number (PIN) printed on your license plate renewal notice. This PIN is essential for accessing your vehicle information online.
- Participating County for Property Tax: Your county collector’s office must have transmitted your property tax payment information electronically to the Department of Revenue for the vehicle, trailer, or ATV you intend to renew. Check this list of participating counties to confirm if your county is included. Keep in mind that there might be a delay between your tax payment and the county transmitting this information. If your county is not yet participating, consider contacting your county assessor or collector to encourage their participation and streamline this process for future renewals. You can find their contact information here.
- Personal Property Tax Receipt (Alternative): If your county is not yet participating, you may still be eligible to renew online if you possess a paid personal property tax receipt that specifically lists the vehicle you are renewing. Learn how to obtain your personal property tax receipt here.
- Registration Status: Your current vehicle registration should not be expired, or if expired, it must be within the last 90 days. Renewals beyond 90 days of expiration may require a different process.
- Acceptable Payment Methods: You must be able to pay using E-Check, a debit card, or a major credit card for online transactions. Please note that a small convenience fee applies to online renewals to cover processing costs. This fee is minimal, at just $0.50 for E-Check transactions and 2.0% + $0.25 for credit/debit card transactions, making online renewal still a highly cost-effective and time-saving option.
Even if you haven’t received your registration renewal notice, you might still be able to renew online by using the alternate login option and entering information directly from your current registration. If online renewal is not possible for you, you have other convenient options: you can renew in person at any Missouri license office, by mail, or by phone at 573-751-1957 (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Some local license offices may also offer phone-in renewal services. Visit https://dor.mo.gov/license-office-locator/ for detailed information on office locations and services. If you are unsure about your eligibility to renew online or need to retrieve your PIN, you can contact the Department of Revenue directly at [email protected]. When contacting them, please include the following details to help them assist you efficiently:
- Your name as the vehicle owner;
- The year and make of your vehicle;
- The last 5 digits of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN);
- Your current license plate number; and
- The expiration date of your current registration.
Important Reminder: In the event that your new registration plates or tabs do not arrive before your current registration expires, you can utilize the temporary vehicle registration receipt as valid proof of registration. This temporary receipt is valid for up to 30 days from the renewal date or until you receive your permanent plates or tabs in the mail, whichever comes first. Make sure to print your registration receipt immediately after completing your online transaction and keep it with you in your vehicle at all times.
