Starting with a trial run at the Southgate Shopping Center store in Lakeland, Florida, on August 3rd, Publix Deli Online Easy Ordering will soon roll out to 50 stores company-wide, marking a significant step in catering to the evolving needs of grocery shoppers.

This new service allows customers to bypass traditional ordering methods by placing orders for subs, wraps, sliced meats, and cheeses online. The system is designed for ease of use, enabling customers to select their desired items, customize their orders with specific toppings and bread choices, and schedule a convenient pick-up time. This initiative directly addresses the growing demand for convenience without compromising the quality and variety that Publix deli is known for.

Shannon Patten, spokeswoman for Publix Supermarkets, Inc., emphasized the customer-centric approach behind this innovation. “Our customers have told us that they’re looking for convenience. They love the Publix deli, they love the variety that we offer, but they’re looking for convenience,” Patten stated. Previously, customers could call ahead or fax orders, but the online system offers a more streamlined and user-friendly experience.

The online ordering process is straightforward. Customers can access the Publix Deli Online Easy Ordering platform via the Publix website (www.publix.com/order) on their computers or smartphones. Upon placing their order, they receive a pick-up number and can select their preferred pick-up time. The system also includes a feature to save favorite orders, further simplifying repeat purchases and personalizing the ordering experience.

While some customers, like 18-year-old Kathy Hernandez, express a preference for in-person ordering for complex customizations, the online system is designed to accommodate detailed preferences. The ability to customize orders online, choosing specific breads and toppings, aims to bridge the gap between online convenience and the personalized service Publix deli is known for.

The service is offered free of charge, with no minimum order requirement, and payment is collected at the time of pick-up. Customers retain the flexibility to modify their orders by contacting the store directly, ensuring adaptability and customer service remains a priority.

John Fleming, spokesman for the Florida Retail Federation, views this as grocery stores adapting to compete with quick-service restaurants. “The key question is whether they will be able to leverage the consumer engagement online into other types of products,” Fleming noted, highlighting the potential for expanding online services to other grocery departments if the deli service proves successful. He also pointed out the challenges in online grocery retail, particularly regarding delivery costs and thin profit margins, making Publix’s focus on in-store pick-up a potentially strategic approach.

For busy individuals like Marcho Harvey, a Lakeland barber, the online ordering system promises significant time savings, especially during lunch breaks. The efficiency of online ordering allows customers to pre-plan their deli purchases, reducing wait times and streamlining their shopping experience. Furthermore, select stores will feature in-store kiosks for on-site ordering, allowing customers to place orders while shopping for other items and pick up their deli selections later. Designated “Online Easy Pickup” areas will ensure a smooth and quick collection process.

“This is a very convenient service for our on-the-go customers,” Patten reiterated, underscoring Publix’s commitment to adapting to the fast-paced lifestyles of its clientele. By embracing online ordering for its deli, Publix is positioning itself to meet the evolving demands of modern consumers, prioritizing both convenience and the high-quality deli offerings customers have come to expect.
